 Thermodynamics & Financial Damages in Oil & Gas
The oil & gas industry is subject to various types of disputes between the upstream sector that extracts natural resources to the downstream sector that manufactures industrial and consumer products. The industry is comprised of numerous stake holders with many opportunities for disputes to develop between parties. A common remedy in these disputes is financial damages. However, estimating financial damages in the oil & gas industry requires more than just a basic understanding of accounting concepts, but also an understanding of the mechanisms of how the natural laws of energy and heat (thermodynamics) affects financial damage estimates.

The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the mechanisms by which thermodynamics affect measurements of financial damages.
Part I provides an overview of the standard financial damage model.
Part II provides an easy to understand explanation of thermodynamics.
Part III provides a review of common mistakes from six actual cases using the concepts from the first two parts.
